Themed Trip: Buxton on a Budget
Travelling on a shoe-string? Or not wanting to break the bank on your holiday? This page lists all the free things to do in Buxton and the more budget places to go.
For those looking for history and culture, the Buxton Museum & Art Gallery is free to enter and one could easily spend an afternoon exploring the many floors of Scrivener’s second-hand book shop. The Green Man Gallery, Gallery in the Gardens offer free exhibition of local art and The Arches artisan market is free to nosy around. The Bazaars and many of the fairs at the Pavilion Gardens are also free to enter.
For those wanting to be outside, why not have a wander through the parks and gardens or the woodlands. Follow the sculpture trail or the Ring of Trees walk. And the biggest playground of all, the Peak District, is right at your tiptoes. On a sunny Saturday afternoon, there is no nicer spot than reclining on the grass at The Park watching a game of cricket or watching the ducks and swans in the Pavilion Gardens.
If you’re here during the summer Festivals, head for the live music at the Pavilion Gardens or Fringe Sunday preview performances and other street theatre. Local brass bands play for your pleasure on the Pavilion Gardens Bandstand throughout the year on Sunday afternoons: see our calendar for dates.
There is live music on most nights in Buxton at pubs such as The Queens Head, The New Inn and The Old Clubhouse. See the news page for the latest listing. And if not music, pub quizzes, karaoke and rock’n’roll bingo are alternative evening activities.
Budget accommodation can be found at the Premier Inn, Buckingham Hotel, caravan parks and campsites or nearby youth hostels. Standard pub grub can be found at the Wye Bridge House (Wetherspoons), the King’s Head and The Old Clubhouse.
