The Buxton Hot Baths
The historic Hot Baths, located at the east end of The Crescent, were first built in 1811 to serve the increasing number of visitors to the town to take the water cure. They were redeveloped in 1853 by Henry Currey, the Duke of Devonshire’s architect.
The building was converted into the Cavendish Arcade shopping centre in the 1980s, following the decline of hydrotherapy treatments. However, the history of the famous baths is still apparent throughout the arcade with steps down to the original baths visible through glass panels in the floors. An original plunge pool also remains in the centre of the building and much of the original Minton tiling decorates the walls and doorways – it’s worth a walk through just to see this!
During the conversion, the beautiful, barrel-vaulted, stained-glass canopy was installed covering the arcade.
