Changing Places Toilet Now Available at the Pavilion Gardens
The Pavilion Gardens Buxton, in partnership with High Peak Borough Council and Parkwood Leisure, has installed a Changing Places toilet at the site – a toilet that supports the needs of disabled people.
Over a quarter of a million people in the UK with a disability cannot use a standard accessible toilet, as they do not meet the needs of all people with a disability. These needs are met by Changing Places toilets.
The facility has a movable hoist to allow access across the room, a changing table, adjustable sink and toilet. The installation means that everyone, regardless of their access needs, disability or reliance on the assistance of carers or specialist equipment, can use a toilet hygienically and with dignity.
The reality is that some people cannot visit shops, enjoy community life, socialise and travel. All the things the majority of us take for granted in everyday life simply because there are no toilet facilities they can use.
By introducing the facility at Pavilion Gardens, as the first accessible change in Buxton, more people will be able to not only enjoy the Pavilion Gardens, but all of Buxton and what it has to offer.
Changing Places Toilets are campaigning for installation of their facilities in city and town centres, shopping centres, arts and cultural venues, hospitals, transport hubs, leisure complexes, sports stadiums, arenas, entertainment venues and attractions, to emphasise their importance of making such places accessible.
Paul Kelsall, the General Manager at Pavilion Gardens states,
“We are so proud that we will be able to offer this facility and make such a difference to people visiting Pavilion Gardens and Buxton. Our sincere thanks to Sandra Jowett (Accessible Buxton) and High Peak Borough Council for their guidance and support to enable us to deliver this project and become one of the few places in the Peak District to offer this service”.
High Peak Executive Councillor Fiona Sloman said:
“Changing Places facilities make an enormous difference by opening up experiences and activities to people who may have struggled to access them previously. I’m pleased that by working in partnership with Accessible Buxton, Parkwood and the Pavilion Gardens, we’re now able to offer these facilities in the town.
“I know this will be an important and much-valued amenity and I’d like to thank Sandra and the Accessible Buxton group for their work in ensuring we’re providing services and facilities that meet the needs of everyone. It’s great that it is now open and available for public use in time for the longer days of spring and summer when we’ll be welcoming new visitors and those returning to the High Peak.”
The Changing Places toilet was opened on Monday 14 May 2022 and is accessed via a Radar Key.

How to Find the Changing Places Toilet
Inside the main entrance off the promenade, find this doorway opposite the ice cream parlour to the left of the stairs.
Go through the door and find this door on your left, opposite a set of stairs.
This is the sign on the door. Use a radar key to enter the Changing Places toilet.
