Buxton Opera House

The Theatre in the Hills

Buxton Opera House is one of Britain’s leading provincial theatres, practically bursting at the seams with around 450 performances each year including dance, comedy, children’s shows, drama, music, pantomime, opera and even shows on ice!  As well as a lively fringe theatre and a community and education programme, Buxton Opera House is also home to the prestigious Buxton International Festival.

First opened on 1st June 1903 and lovingly restored to its former glory in 2001, Buxton Opera House is an exquisitely beautiful Edwardian theatre and one of the country’s finest examples of Frank Matcham theatre design. To find out about opportunities to look around the building and learn more of its history on a Back-Stage Pass Tour, click here.

Buxton is also home to the Pavilion Arts Centre, its first new theatre in over 100 years.
