Octagon Concert Hall Officially Re-opens

The Octagon Concert Hall at the Pavilion Gardens officially opened last weekend at the Great Peak District Fair and Buxton Beer Festival following major renovations. The iconic, Grade-II listed building has been closed to the public since October 2015 after remote camera surveys showed major potential safety issues in the roof, partly caused by poor quality repairs undertaken in the 1950s.

Repair work started in 2017 following exploratory and investigation works which showed the domed roof of the building, which was constructed in the 1870s to the designs of local architect Robert Rippon Duke, was found to be dangerously unsafe.

High Peak Borough Council has invested £3 million to upgrade and repair the building including significant structural repairs to the dome and sub-structure, replacing the floor, upgrading the electrics, installing new lighting and renovating the stage area. The interior has also been returned to its original colour scheme following the discovery of the original paint under layers from succeeding re-decorations, giving the building a real heritage feel. Carrying out the work, whilst respecting the integrity of its listed status and best conservation practice, proved challenging and required uniquely-skilled workers. This, along with extended periods of poor weather over the past two winters, resulted in progressive delays to its completion.

The High Peak Borough Council and Pavilion Gardens thank all their customers for bearing with them – “we really do appreciate your patience and good will and hope that you will all enjoy the results of this multi-million pound investment for generations to come”.
