Themed Trip: History & Culture

There are many ways to soak up Buxton’s rich heritage overflowing with ancient settlers, royal prisoners, outlaws and nobles and to learn the cultural ways of the hill folk.

Why not start with an introductory tour of the town on the Discover Buxton tram; get your bearings and see the sights. Walking tours are also available for those wanting to stretch their legs or spend a little longer looking at the magnificent architecture of the town such as the Devonshire Dome. For those interested in ancient culture, join a Roman Tour or head to the Buxton Museum to see the many archaeological finds from the area. Download the Museum’s Pocket Wonder interactive tours and take yourself out into the landscape. Back-stage tours of the Buxton Opera House are also available periodically throughout the year.

For the art lover, we have art galleries aplenty – Buxton Museum & Art Gallery, Green Man Gallery, Gallery in the Gardens: all free to enter. Or spy a classic at the antique and book fairs at the Pavilion Gardens or hidden away in Scrivener’s second-hand book shop.

For hotel accommodation, you can’t get more historical than the Old Hall Hotel whose history pre-dates the Tudors for whom the oldest part of the present building was built. Those enjoying a more Victorian feel should head to the Palace Hotel and gaze upon the high ceilings and grand conservatory.

Make sure you spend a theatrical or musical evening under the stunning decoration of the Buxton Opera House, the heart of the town, or relax into world cinema with Buxton Film. Head up to Higher Buxton to one of the many traditional pubs keeping you warm and out of the brisk evening air such as Sun Inn, Cheshire Cheese or micro pub, The Ale Stop.
