Buxton Festival Book Weekend
A book weekend and literary festival in November as part of the Buxton Festival.
2018 Book Weekend
Buxton International Festival’s annual Book Weekend returns to the Pavilion Arts Centre on 23 and 24 November 2018 with a star-studded line-up of authors and personalities with great stories to tell.
The Weekend is headlined by Alan Johnson on Friday 23 November, looking back at the personal jukebox of his life and the music that has sustained him through his career from postman, to politician, to best-selling author. Then on Saturday 24 November, Countdown and The Apprentice star Nick Hewer takes us through his colourful life, from A to Z.
On Friday 23 November, historian Peter Moore presents an original and fascinating social history based around the life of the ship Endeavour, from coal carrier, to the most significant vessel in British exploration, to playing an active role in the American War of Independence. On Saturday 24 November, Kate Hubbard looks at the colourful life of Bess of Hardwick, businesswoman, money-lender and property tycoon, through the construction of her four country houses. Also, Adrian Tinniswood presents a domestic history of the royal household: the power struggles and petty rivalries, the tension between duty and desire.
With detective fiction a perennial favourite, novelists Sarah Ward and Kate Griffin join forces to discuss their respective mystery series, and crime from a woman’s point of view.
There is also a special Friends of Buxton Festival Coffee Morning talk with Shirley Williams, remembering her uncle Edward Brittain, killed 100 years ago in World War I.
Special offer: book for four or more BIF Book Weekend events and receive a 25% discount. (When booked at the same time – offer does not include Shirley Williams coffee morning talk.)
