2019: A Year of Change for Buxton

2019 is shaping up to be quite the year for Buxton!

The Pavilion Gardens, in the centre of the town, are under new management. Parkwood Leisure are taking over the running of the cafe, shop boutique, coffee bar and events programme in the Octagon Hall. They also plan to re-open the refreshments kiosk by the lake and develop the Winter Garden Conservatory. The complex is closed during January but should re-open in February as normal. In the mean time, there is a self-service tourist information point located at the bottom of the conservatory, adjacent to the Opera House entrance. It is open daily from 10am to 4pm. A tourism service by email and telephone is also available between 10am and 2pm: tourism@highpeak.gov.uk or 01298 25106.

Buxton’s Tourist Information Centre will eventually move from the Pavilion Gardens to the Pump Room and hosted by the Buxton Crescent Heritage Trust. Along with the TIC, the highly anticipated Buxton Crescent Visitor Experience will launch in the Spring from the Pump Room enabling visitors to view rooms in the Crescent and find out what life was like in the Georgian era.

The Buxton Crescent hotel and spa is due to open in the autumn. Fingers crossed all goes to plan. The contractors are currently working on the lower floors and fixtures and fittings are going in on the upper floors.

2019 also brings anniversaries for some of our festivals. It will be the 10th Anniversary of the Buxton Military Tattoo which raises funds for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and the 40th Anniversary of the Buxton International Festival. It also marks the 40th Buxton Festival Fringe which is one year younger than its counterpart. Details of all the special events and celebrations will be posted here in due course.

The University of Derby will be developing its Centre for Contemporary Hospitality & Tourism which will be based at it’s Buxton Campus in the Devonshire Dome. We hope to bring you more information about this very soon.

Another new development for 2019 will be a new character guide for Discover Buxton Tours, celebrating the Georgian ‘goingson’ in the town. This follows their new tour guide in 2018, theatre designer Frank Matcham.

So, with all this going on, Buxton is surely worth a visit or two or three this year!! Plan your visit with us. If you have any queries, please contact us.
