Pooles Cavern

Welcome to the Poole's Cavern

“The first wonder of the Peaks”

This great carboniferous limestone cavern is one of the finest show caves in England which boasts many strange and wondrous formations, sculptured over millions of years. Mary,Queen of Scots was said to  have visited and people have coming ever since.

Evidence of pre historic life from the Neolithic and early Bronze ages have been found. Romano British finds also point to this area being farmed and populated and the cavern seems to have been the centre for bronze work in the area.

The eponymous outlaw was said to have used the Cavern as a convenient hide out sometime between 1400 and 1460 at a time when there was much fighting and mayhem.

Today, Poole's Cavern has a modern visitor's centre, restaurant and children's play area, set at the foot of the country park and Grin Low. At the top of the hill you will find Solomon's Temple, a folly from which is a panoramic view of Buxton and the surrounding hills.

Poole's Cavern is open all year round from 9.30-5.00, March to November and weekends between 10.00-4.30, from December to February.

Pathways are accessible for all ages.
