Buxton goes for the Big Bloom

Poole's Cavern Visitor Centre

The new visitor's centre at Poole's Cavern was formerly opened by the Duke of Devonshire in May, marking yet another milestone in the development of one of Buxton's premier attractions. The Buxton Civic Association was primarily responsible for seeing the centre built which will also house educational seminar rooms. This half a million pound project complements 'Go Ape', also the initiative of the Civic Association, and will ensure visitors, students and the people of Buxton have an even more informative recreational attraction that has been bringing people to this part of the Peak District for hundreds of years.

Help Buxton to get blooming!

If you have a passion for gardening and live or work in the Buxton area, you may be interested in helping out with this year’s Buxton in Bloom competition.

For the first time, Buxton is in the national finals of the Britain in Bloom competition and residents and businesses have an opportunity to boost the town’s prospects of winning.

It is really easy for businesses and shops to make a contribution to the town’s chances of winning. They can sponsor a hanging basket, a town centre display or a roundabout display. Alternatively, they may donate money towards the competition or for prizes.

Residents can help by boosting their gardens, tubs and baskets with colourful blooms. They can also enter their own front garden or nominate either a neighbour’s front garden or basket or a street in the various prize-winning competitions.

The regional judging takes place on Friday 18 July and the national judging will be on Monday 18 August.

Andrew Bingham, Executive Councillor for Social and Community Development, said: “Last year, Buxton won the East Midlands in Bloom competition, thanks to tireless work of the Bloom committee and the generous contributions both of time and money from residents and businsess. If you want to contribute towards the chance of Buxton winning the national competition then please let us know.”

Sponsorship forms and nomination forms can be downloaded from the Council’s website at: www.highpeak.gov.uk
