Buxton Festival is as good as an arts festival gets.
(The Independent)

The largest festival of its kind in England and the only festival in the UK dedicated to programming rarely performed English language opera. The Buxton Festival attracts over 36,000 people from all over the world with a unique award winning programme of opera from baroque to the contemporary. In recent years it has succeeded in providing the UK premières of some excellent but little-known pieces (including Mozart’s Ascanio in Alba). Buxton Festival offers a truly unique experience, surrounded by the beautiful landscape of the Peak District and set amidst the regal architecture of the historic spa town of Buxton.

The Festival’s incredible opera programme is complemented by a highly respected and much envied Literary Series, with talks every morning from speakers with a broad experience in well crafted writing, whether in biography, fiction, politics or personal memoir. (recent speakers include Gore Vidal, Robin Cook, Kate Adie, Tom Stoppard, Michael Palin, Germaine Greer, and Patrick Stewart). These are followed by a choice of concerts and recitals in the afternoon, coupled with relaxed late-night events including short films.

The biggest and the best International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival ever!

We have never had such a great programme as this years 14th International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. Held every summer at the Opera House in Buxton, the Festival attracts thousands of visitors, including performers, supporters, and Gilbert and Sullivan enthusiasts from across the world. It was established in 1994 by Ian Smith and his son Neil to enhance the knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the works of Gilbert & Sulliven.

We also have the goal of reinstating Gilbert & Sulliven and the performing arts in schools across Britain. We are delighted to welcome back the Carl Rosa Opera Company with two brand new productions - Yeomen of the Guard and Lolanthe, as well as our very own Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company with two more brand new productions - The Mikado and .. wait for it... Patience, We know this latter choice will please many people who have asked for it in recent years.
