Tesco to reveal plans for new store
Monday, 06 December 2010 17:23

Rumours that Tesco have been planning to build a new superstore on what is currently the Nestle Buxton Water site have been confirmed by the retail giant in the following press release.

 - Members of the public are being asked to comment on Tesco’s initial plans for Buxton, which include a number of options for the use of the land adjacent to the proposed supermarket.

The initial Tesco plans will go on public display during a three day exhibition on Thursday 9th, Friday 10th and Saturday 11th of December between 12pm and 6pm (Thursday and Friday) and 10am -4pm on Saturday at 9-10 St Annes Square, next to the Town Hall.

Matthew Magee, corporate affairs manager at Tesco said: “We want to talk to as many people as possible about our initial plans to bring a new Tesco to the area, which would offer a large range of high quality products at the great value we’re known for.  We are delighted to be proposing a scheme for Buxton which, if successful, would create hundreds of new jobs as well as enabling the town’s landmark company, Nestlé Waters, to relocate to brand new premises.”

Tesco’s proposed purchase of the site will enable Nestlé Waters to move from its existing Station Road site to brand new facilities onWaterswallows Lane. Nestlé Waters recently announced that they needed to move to the new site to keep their business in Buxton for the next 100 years.

Nestlé Waters comments; “Buxton Natural Mineral Water is now the most popular British water in the UK and the business has grown accordingly. This year alone we have increased our staff numbers at the factory by 19 per cent taking us to 86 permanent employees. We also recently agreed on a new licence with High Peak Borough Council which extends our commitment to Buxton for another 100 years. But, the reality is that the current facility is too old and too limited for our needs and we need a new plant in order for us to remain competitive. “

The Tesco proposal, which would create over 200 new full and part-time jobs for the town, would provide the area with a wider choice of quality fresh goods at low prices. The initial store design ideas include a number of environmental features including roof lights and high-level glazing for natural light, roof air vents, rainwater harvesting and energy produced from waste.

Matthew continued: “We recognise the uniqueness of Buxton and the importance that people within the town quite rightly place on good quality design, so we are looking forward to discussing and receiving feedback about ideas for the design of the store. Our initial proposal also seeks people’s views about what they would like to see built on the land next to our proposed supermarket. We have some early ideas but we really want to find out what people would like to see there.  We are urging people to come and talk to us about our initial ideas, before we consult on our final designs in early 2011."

The public consultation will provide more detailed information on the proposals as well as allowing local residents the opportunity to feedback their opinions. - end
