Buxton Guided/Tram Tours

Discover Buxton Tours

Journey back in time to experience a bygone era aboard a “Victorian tram” and relax as knowledgeable guides reveal the historic and architectural gems of the ancient spa town of Buxton.  The newly converted Wonder of the Peak leaves hourly from the Pavilion Gardens gates next to the Opera House and takes you on a journey to showcase the very best of the town.

You will see the richly decorated complex architecture of the Crescent (1780-86) by John Carr and visit the old Devonshire Royal Hospital to marvel at a dome bigger than St. Paul’s Cathedral.  There will be tales of Mary Queen of Scots and her visits to the town and the opportunity to hear more about the Opera House.  You will see the magnificence of the lower town spread below you as the tram trundles sedately to explore Higher Buxton, the market place and the beauty and simplicity of St. Anne’s Church (1600).  There is also the opportunity to visit Poole’s Cavern and Grinlow Woods.  Tours leave on the hour from 10am onwards.  PRE-BOOKING IS ADVISED.

Or why not take the Explorer Tour and uncover the natural history of Buxton  This is the latest addition to Discover Buxton tours and start from outside the Opera House daily but need booking through Discover Buxton 01298 79648. This is what Ali, our very own Dora the Explorer, had to say:

‘Learn about the 400 million year history of the Peaklands, discover what shapes the landscape of the Peak District today, learn how the region developed with a mix of local and Peakland history and heritage and find out about the springs which source Buxton Water.’

The Explorer tour takes you up into the hills around Buxton and to the local tourist spots of Solomon’s Temple and Corbar Cross, through picturesque woodlands and down into the Wye River valley. It is therefore great for new visitors who want help navigating Buxton’s green spaces. The tour lasts at least three hours and longer at a slower walking pace and so is not for the faint hearted – some parts of the route are steep and after rain become muddy. Sensible shoes are therefore required and at least a litre of water and a raincoat are recommended. It lasts 3 hours and starts at 1 pm daily. Pre booking please via Discover Buxton 01298 79648 £12 pp.

The Accessible Tour takes a stroll around the Pavilion Gardens but with the same tour content as the Explorer Tour. It is designed for those who are either unable to hike up hills or just don’t want to and is fantastic for wheelchair users and those with prams. 11 am daily £6 pp Groups of 6-12 people.

Tours start and finish at the Buxton Opera House and must be pre-booked. For the Explorer Tour group numbers are restricted to 10-12 and family tickets are available. A minimum age of 11 is advised although exceptions can be made for experienced walkers. Tour start times are also flexible subject to other bookings.
